Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and is one of the few amino acids to cross the blood-brain barrier. It is classified as a non-essential amino acid, however can become conditionally essential due to stress and must therefore be obtained through the diet.
Glutamine has a role in the following:
Protein synthesis: Glutamine contributes up to 80% of free nitrogen found in the body. Some evidence suggests that L-Glutamine supplementation may help to increase blood plasma levels of Growth Hormone by stimulating the anterior pituitary gland.
Regulation of the acid-base balance: Glutamine is thought to play a role in regulating the body’s acid-base balance by reducing lactic acid build-up that results from the utilisation of glycogen.
Immune Support: Anecdotal reports suggest that glutamine is important for the functioning of the immune system.
Maintaining the normal integrity of intestinal mucosa: Glutamine is thought to be a major energy substrate for cells in the stomach.
